Wasatch Reading Summit - 2017
:Decoding Dyslexia Utah, Utah State Office of Education and University of Utah Reading Clinic are excited to announce the Wasatch Reading Summit. It is a comprehensive professional development conference for new and veteran teachers and for parents of students with Dyslexia. The conference will feature keynote addresses by:
Dr. Richard Selznick is a psychologist, nationally certified school psychologist, assistant professor of pediatrics, school consultant and Wilson certified reading instructor. Dr. Selznick is the Director of the Cooper Learning Center, a Division of the Department of Pediatrics/ Cooper University Healthcare. The author of three books, “The Shut-Down Learner: Helping Your Academically Discouraged Child,” “School Struggles: A Guide To Your Shut-Down Learner’s Success,” and the 2015 release of “Dyslexia Screening: Essential Concepts for Schools & Parents.”
David A. Kilpatrick, PhD is associate professor of psychology for the State University of New York, College at Cortland. He is a New York State certified school psychologist with 28 years experience in schools. He has been teaching courses in learning disabilities and educational psychology since 1994. David is a reading researcher and the author of two books on reading, Essentials of Assessing, Preventing, and Overcoming Reading Difficulties, and Equipped for Reading Success.
John Rodrigues M. Ed. is a national advocate for dyslexia and the founder of ThinkLexic, a non-profit organization serving the dyslexic community. Rodrigues graduated from U.C. Berkeley and spent one year as a visiting scholar at Harvard University. He is the author of "High School Dropout to Harvard" and featured in the PBS film about dyslexia, "Being You.” John founded Thinklexic to drive advocacy and use the arts to empower kids with dyslexia. He holds a Master’s degree in Education with a focus on learning disabilities. He's interested in visual thinking and education innovation. He lives in Claremont, Calif. with his wife and daughter.
Dr. Sam Goldstein is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Utah School of Medicine and on staff at the University Neuropsychiatric Institute. He is Clinical Director of the Neurology Learning and Behavior Center.He is Clinical Director of the Neurology Learning and Behavior Center. The Center conducts evaluations, consultation and provides treatment services to 300 individuals and families each year. Dr. Goldstein has authored fifty trade and science texts as well as over three dozen science based book chapters and thirty peer reviewed research articles. He has also co-authored six psychological tests. He currently serves as Editor in Chief of the Journal of Attention Disorders and sits on the editorial boards of six peer reviewed journals.
There will also be break-out sessions by national and local experts on practical take-and- use ideas for effective reading instruction, strategies for helping students at home and in the classroom, evidence-based remediation practices for unexpected reading failure, orthographical history of words and effective implementation of reading interventions in the multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS).For information about the Miller Campus please visit:
